We are
located 114 km east of Auckland, or about 85 minutes drive.
Coming
from the south (e.g. Rotorua or Taupo) it’s a 2.5 to 3 hrs drive.
The
roads west and south of Thames are generally flat and straight with a
few curves, but to the north and east the roads are very slow, hilly and
with many sharp bends.
From
Auckland, follow SH1 (State Highway 1, or the Waikato Expressway)
towards Hamilton, and approaching Nikau Rd at the Bombay Hills be
prepared for a marvellous view of the Waikato Region from the highest
point of the journey. Then coming down the steep Bombay Hills look for
the turning to the left for Hwy 2 to Coromandel. Follow this for 40 mins
or so and you will see another turn to the left for Hwy 25 to Coromandel
and Thames. Be warned that some bridges are narrow and only allow
one-way driving at a time. The long Kopu Bridge over the Waihou river just south of Thames
is controlled by traffic lights because it is just one lane wide. At the
height of summer you could be waiting up to five minutes but at other
times there is less than a minute’s wait.
